KSIU Policy for Waste Disposal to Landfill

1. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to minimize the amount of waste sent to landfills by King Salman International University (KSIU), thereby reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable waste management practices. This policy outlines the procedures and responsibilities for waste disposal to landfill.

2. Scope

This policy applies to all departments, offices, and facilities within KSIU. It covers the identification, segregation, reduction, and disposal of waste that is destined for landfill.

3. Definitions

• Landfill Waste: Waste that cannot be recycled, composted, or otherwise diverted from landfill disposal.

• Waste Generator: Any individual or department that produces waste.

• Waste Management Facility: A designated area or facility authorized to handle and dispose of waste.

4. Responsibilities

• Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Department: Responsible for overseeing the implementation of this policy, providing training, and ensuring compliance with regulations.

• Waste Generators: Responsible for segregating waste, following proper disposal procedures, and maintaining accurate records.

• Facilities Management: Responsible for coordinating the collection, transportation, and disposal of landfill waste.

5. Procedures

5.1 Waste Segregation

• All waste must be segregated at the source into recyclable, compostable, and landfill categories.

• Clearly labelled bins must be provided in all areas to facilitate proper segregation.

5.2 Waste Reduction

• Departments are encouraged to reduce waste generation through practices such as double-sided printing, digital documentation, and minimizing the use of disposable items.

• The university will promote waste reduction initiatives and provide resources to support these efforts.

5.3 Collection and Transportation

• Landfill waste must be collected regularly and transported to designated waste management facilities.

• Waste collection schedules and routes must be planned to ensure efficient and timely disposal.

5.4 Disposal

• Landfill waste must be disposed of at authorized landfill sites that comply with all relevant regulations.

• The university will work with waste management contractors to ensure that landfill waste is handled and disposed of responsibly.

6. Training and Education

• All personnel involved in waste management must receive training on proper waste segregation, reduction, and disposal procedures.

• The EHS Department will provide regular training sessions and updates on best practices and policy changes.

7. Monitoring and Reporting

• The EHS Department will monitor waste generation and disposal practices to ensure compliance with this policy.
