King Salman International University (KSIU) is dedicated to minimizing plastic use on campus. The university has phased out single-use plastics and encourages the use of reusable alternatives. Initiatives such as providing refillable water stations and promoting reusable bags and containers are part of the university’s efforts to reduce plastic waste and its environmental impact. 

KSIU Policy for Minimisation of Plastic Use

1. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to reduce the use of plastic on campus, thereby minimizing environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices. This policy outlines the procedures and responsibilities for minimizing plastic use at King Salman International University (KSIU).

2. Scope

This policy applies to all departments, offices, and facilities within KSIU. It covers the reduction, replacement, and responsible disposal of plastic materials.

3. Definitions

  • Single-use Plastics: Plastic products intended to be used once and then discarded, such as plastic bags, straws, cutlery, and bottles.

  • Reusable Alternatives: Products designed for multiple uses, such as reusable bags, bottles, and containers.

  • Plastic Waste: Any plastic material that is discarded after use.

4. Responsibilities

  • Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Department: Responsible for overseeing the implementation of this policy, providing training, and ensuring compliance with regulations.

  • Waste Generators: Responsible for reducing plastic use, following proper disposal procedures, and maintaining accurate records.

  • Facilities Management: Responsible for coordinating the collection, transportation, and disposal of plastic waste.

5. Procedures

5.1 Reduction of Single-use Plastics

  • All departments and facilities must eliminate the use of single-use plastics wherever possible.

  • Alternatives such as reusable bags, bottles, and containers must be promoted and provided.

5.2 Replacement with Sustainable Alternatives

  • Departments are encouraged to replace plastic products with sustainable alternatives made from materials such as glass, metal, or biodegradable substances.

  • The university will support initiatives to source and provide these alternatives.

5.3 Responsible Disposal

  • Plastic waste must be disposed of responsibly through recycling programs.

  • Clearly labelled recycling bins must be provided in all areas to facilitate proper segregation and disposal of plastic waste.

5.4 Procurement Policies

  • The university’s procurement policies must prioritize the purchase of products with minimal plastic packaging and those made from sustainable materials.

  • Suppliers must be encouraged to reduce plastic packaging and provide sustainable alternatives.

6. Training and Education

  • All personnel involved in procurement and waste management must receive training on the importance of reducing plastic use and proper disposal methods.

  • The EHS Department will provide regular training sessions and updates on best practices and policy changes.

7. Awareness Campaigns

  • The university will conduct awareness campaigns to educate students, staff, and the community about the environmental impact of plastic use and the benefits of reducing plastic waste.

  • Campaigns will include workshops, seminars, and promotional materials to encourage sustainable practices.

8. Monitoring and Reporting

  • The EHS Department will monitor plastic use and waste generation to ensure compliance with this policy.

  • Waste generators must maintain accurate records of plastic use and disposal and submit reports to the EHS Department as required.

9. Compliance and Enforcement

  • Non-compliance with this policy may result in disciplinary action, including fines and penalties.

  • The EHS Department will conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure adherence to this policy.

10. Review and Revision

  • This policy will be reviewed annually by the EHS Department and updated as necessary to reflect changes in regulations and best practices.

By adhering to this policy, KSIU aims to significantly reduce plastic use on campus, promoting a more sustainable and environmentally responsible community.
