King Salman International University (KSIU) has developed a plan to reduce plastic waste by employing waste prevention strategies that effectively reduce the volume of waste requiring management.
1. Waste Prevention Strategies
Avoidance:
Eliminating the need for a plastic product or material.
Source Reduction:
Reducing waste and pollution at the source through process changes.
Direct Re-use:
Extending product life, serving as a diversion of waste flows.
2. Promoting Behavioral Change
Changing attitudes and behaviors regarding plastic use requires:
Raising awareness within the corporate community and the general public.
KSIU plans to promote behavioral changes through:
Public awareness campaigns.
Seminars.
Workshops.
3. Mandating Change Through Regulatory Actions
KSIU is committed to enforcing regulatory strategies to address waste prevention, including:
Bans on single-use plastics.
Imposing limits on the volume of waste generated (source reduction) by certain student activities on campus.
