Antismoking Policy for King Salman International University (KSIU)

Policy Statement

KSIU adopts a green educational politics through its adoption of an antismoking policy to foster a smoke-free campus and thereby protect individual health, reduce exposure to tobacco smoke, and promote a culture of wellness. This is achieved through the reduction of tobacco waste, which is an immense environmental hazard. In line with Egypt 2030 vision, and the Egyptian Ministerial decree (Oct 2020), KSIU adopts a comprehensive tobacco-free policy and health insurance scheme aimed to:

1. Protect public health.

2. Enhance the overall campus environment.

3. Contribute to pollution alleviation and waste reduction associated with tobacco products.

 Purpose

The purpose of this antismoking policy is to promote a healthier campus environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors at KSIU. This policy aims to:

• Reduce the harmful effects of tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure.

• Align with public health initiatives.

• Reflect the university’s commitment to sustainability and health-conscious community building.

Scope

This policy applies to all members of the university community—students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors—and ensures adherence to these regulations on campus. This includes all university-owned or controlled properties:

• Indoor facilities (classrooms, laboratories, offices)

• Outdoor areas (campus grounds, recreational areas)

• University vehicles

The ban encompasses all forms of tobacco products, including but not limited to:

• Cigarettes

• Cigars

• Pipe tobacco

• Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes)

• Smokeless tobacco products (chewing tobacco)

Implementation Procedures

• Signage:

  • Clear “No Smoking” signs will be posted at all entrances to university buildings and in designated outdoor areas to inform individuals of the smoking prohibition.

• Enforcement:

  • Compliance will be monitored by designated university officials.

  • Violations may result in disciplinary actions tailored to the individual’s status:

  • Students: Referred to the Dean of Students.

  • Staff: May face consequences from their supervisors.

• Reporting Violations:

  • Individuals who witness violations are encouraged to report them to campus security or designated administrative offices for appropriate action.

• Support for Cessation:

  • KSIU will provide resources and support for individuals seeking to quit tobacco use, including access to:

  • Counseling services

  • Cessation programs

  • Educational materials

• Education and Awareness:

  • KSIU will implement ongoing educational initiatives to:

  • Raise awareness about the dangers of smoking.

  • Highlight the benefits of a smoke-free environment.

Implementation Steps:

• Stakeholder Engagement:
  • Engaging students, faculty, staff, and community members to ensure understanding and support of the policy.
• Training for Staff:
  • Providing training for campus security and staff on effective enforcement while maintaining respect for individual freedom.
• Regular Review:
  • The policy will be annually reviewed to assess its effectiveness and make necessary adjustments based on feedback.
