The university’s climate research centre studies the impacts of climate change and develops strategies for mitigation and adaptation. King Salman International University (KSIU) also participates in global climate action networks and advocates for environmental policies. KSIU publishes yearly reports about SDG 13; the current report is given here.
Take Urgent Action to Combat Climate Change and Its Impacts
Regulating emissions and promoting developments in renewable energy are crucial goals for combating climate change.
UN discussions and negotiations in 2015 identified the connection between the post-2015 sustainable development process, the financing for development process (Addis Ababa), and the climate change conference (Paris).
A report in May 2015 concluded that an ambitious climate agreement in Paris could enable countries to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Tackling climate change is only possible if the SDGs are achieved, as economic development, poverty, gender equality, and energy are closely linked to climate.
The United Nations encourages the public sector to lead efforts in reducing environmental impacts.
University Policy to Achieve the Goal
Program for Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction:
Increase green spaces and crops.
Using bicycles.
Using new and renewable energy sources.
Using electric cars.
Reducing the entry of fossil fuel vehicles into the university campus.
Encouraging walking and reducing car use through running and walking competitions.
Green Building Concept:
Preserving and maintaining green spaces to enhance biodiversity and create a distinctive social environment.
The university’s green space is estimated at 78,258 square meters (19 acres) across branches:
Ras Sudr branch: 30,000 square meters (7 acres).
Tur Sinai branch: 38,285 square meters (9 acres).
Sharm El Sheikh branch: 10,000 square meters (2 acres).
Waste Management Programs:
Contracting with a private company for cleaning services.
Waste collection is done daily, and a specialized company removes it.
Establishing a waste recycling management unit to sort and recycle regular, medical, and agricultural waste, maximizing environmental and economic returns.
Research and Studies:
Conducting research on environmental security crises, climate change, and carbon emissions.
Using mathematical models to predict risks in sectors like water resources, coasts, and agriculture.
The Faculty of Agriculture studies climate change impacts on crops and develops heat-tolerant varieties.
Preserving natural resources and green spaces.
Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy:
Using energy-saving air conditioning systems (VRF) to reduce electricity consumption by approximately 60%.
Installing solar energy units (e.g., Sharm El-Sheikh branch: 80 kW) to support operations and rationalize energy use.
Renewable energy production accounts for 5% of the total annual energy consumed.
Establishing new solar power stations and a wind power station in the El-Tor branch to increase renewable energy production.
Field Research and Community Engagement:
Organizing field visits to St. Catherine Reserve to study unique vegetation and inventory rare medicinal and aromatic plants in Wadi Feiran, Wadi El-Talaa, and Mount St. Catherine.
Research includes classification of rare species, their uses, and potential applications in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Projects and Initiatives:
Expanding green spaces and plants.
Promoting bicycles and electric cars.
Encouraging walking policies and organizing competitions to reduce car use.
